Designing the Honored Guest Experience

// The challenge

Stanford Blood Center needed a new donor facility in Campbell that would transform the donation experience from a clinical errand into something donors would actively want to repeat. Traditional blood center environments feel transactional and medical, they position donors as patients rather than participants. The design brief was to create a space that communicated warmth, professionalism, and genuine appreciation for every person who walked through the door.

// The strategy

Every design decision was made around a single positioning shift: from patient to honored guest. The space needed to feel less like a clinic and more like a premium wellness environment, welcoming, calm, and quietly celebratory of the act of donation.

• Brand environment: Custom signage system anchored by the warm wood slat wall behind reception, integrating the Stanford Blood Center identity at a scale that commands the space without feeling corporate.
• Donor recognition: Digital display system celebrating milestones, 10th donation, 50th donation, 100th donation, making the act of giving publicly acknowledged and socially reinforced.
• Material palette: Warm wood tones, soft blues, and natural textures creating a spa-adjacent aesthetic that counters the clinical associations of a medical environment.
• Flow and comfort: Donation bay layout and chair selection prioritizing donor comfort and line-of-sight privacy while maintaining efficient staff workflow.

// The result
